The Hilton Hotel today played host to the press conference and draw for “Rocky & the Betfair Prizefighters”, which is due to take place on Saturday night at the Liverpool Olympia. The eight-man tournament requires a draw to see who will fight who in the quarter finals, and unusually, the draw was done today and not on the night as it usually is.
You may think that on Saturday, if you’re one of the lucky ones to have a ticket for the sell-out Matchroom event, you’re only going to see seven fights… Well, you’re not, because Rocky Fielding is topping the bill in a tilt with fellow Scouser Carl Dilks for the vacant English super middleweight title.
Derry Mathews, the man who was a defeated finalist in this competition two years ago at super featherweight, was pitted against the newest member of the eight Jamie Spence.
Two of Mathews’ former foes, Stephen Jennings and Anthony Crolla, will meet in quarter-final number two.
Halifax’s Liam Patrick Walsh will fight Liverpool’s Terry Flannigan in the third quarter-final. Flannigan, like Jamie Spence, was brought in following a withdrawal.
In the last of the quarters, Gary Sykes, a former Lonsdale belt holder, alongside Mathews and Crolla, will fight Tommy Coyle of Hull, who again, is another late call-up.
Flannigan, Spence & Coyle were all called up to participate in this tournament, worth £32,000, after the withdrawals of Nathan Brough, Terry Needham & Kieran Farrell respectively.
Saturday’s Rocky & the Betfair Prizefighters is live on Sky Sports 1 from 8:30pm. “Eight fighters; seven fights; one winner – all on one explosive night”.
Do not miss it.
