Saunders Gets Sebire Test In Manchester

Light welterweight ace Bradley Saunders will face Frenchman Christophe Sebire on the Dereck Chisora-Tyson Fury undercard on Saturday, 26 July at the Phones4u Arena in Manchester.

The unbeaten Sedgefield star is coming off a brilliant first round KO win over Ville Piispanen in Newcastle earlier this month to claim the WBO Inter-Continental crown – his first pro title.

And the win also saw Saunders, a Beijing Olympian and 2007 World Amateur Championship bronze medallist, break into the WBO world top 15 rankings at number 12 as looks to move fast towards a world title shot.

Sebire will be a good test for Saunders; he extended British talent Bradley Skeete the full twelve rounds in February in a WBA Inter-Continental title challenge at welterweight, and came back in May with a second round stoppage of Nemanja Krstin.

Saunders, 28, will do eight rounds against Sabire and is looking to put on a show for his fans.

“I’m looking forward to this one, it’s fantastic getting back in the ring again after beating Piispanen. Sebire has taken Skeete the distance at welterweight and of course I’ll be looking to do a real good job on him,” said Saunders.

“Obviously I was over the moon winning in such dramatic style against Piispanen in front of my home fans. I knew that I was going to knock him out with the body shot as I’d been working on it over and over again in the gym, but I didn’t expect him to go the first time I tried it.

“Now that I’m ranked in the WBO the world title is in my sights, but I want to get some more rounds in so I can get some experience in the bag which I’m sure will come as the fights get harder.

“Sebire is bigger and stronger as he’s fought at welterweight and up at light middleweight so maybe he’ll take me a few rounds more. I know that I won’t have to go looking for him which will make it exciting for the fans.”

Dereck Chisora v Tyson Fury headlines the show for the European and vacant British heavyweight titles and doubles up as a final eliminator for the WBO world title; Billy Joe Saunders challenges Emanuele Blandamura for the vacant European middleweight championship; Liam Smith defends his British light middleweight title against Navid Mansouri; the British and Commonwealth super featherweight championships will be contested between Gary Sykes and Liam Walsh, while Jack Catterall v Nathan Brough has been made for the vacant Central Area light welterweight championship; plus an action-packed undercard featuring the best young talent.
